AGILITY & PLYOMETRICS

AGLILTY

The definition of agility is the ability to change the body’s position efficiently.  Agility requires the integration of isolated movement skills using a combination of balance, coordination, flexibility, endurance, speed/reflexes, and strength.

PLYOMETRICS

Plyometric exercises are based around having muscles exert maximum force in as short a time as possible, with the goal of increasing both speed and power.

Plyometrics are high-velocity dynamic exercises that force muscles to lengthen and contract repeatedly at top speeds; this causes neuromuscular adaptations to increase the rate of motor unit activation.  For these reasons, plyometrics are one of the most functional cross training activities for athletes.

What are the benefits of agility and plyometrics and in physical therapy and training?

This type of training in outpatient physical therapy settings is probably more appropriate in the mid to end stage of rehabilitation. This particular training is an essential component for your recovery and for safe return to sport.  If your rehabilitation did or does not include agility and plyometrics and your sport requires you to run, jump, change directions, accelerate, and decelerate, you are not getting everything you need and deserve.

Agility and plyometric offer the following benefits:

  • Increases tendon stiffness and strength, important in long term tendon health and function.

  • Improves “shock absorbency” at joints.

  • Improves running speed, agility, and quickness.

  • Reduces Injury risks.

  • Improves power, helps increase jumping height and distance.

Our therapist is a Certified Strength and Agility Coach, training in developing individual, sport-specific programs to address this aspect of recovery.  She uses current, evidence-based training and the latest in technology, creating programs that will push you to your limits, improve your performance, and increase your endurance.

In addition to agility and plyometrics, we use Hecostix and BlazePods for improving reaction times and hand-eye coordination.
