INJURY PREVENTION

Physical therapists are probably best known for their ability to help people rehabilitate from surgeries or injuries, but did you know physical therapists can help prevent injuries? Although rehabilitating injuries is a key component of physical therapy, physical therapists also provide services beyond post-operative care or injury recovery.

How can physical therapists benefit you?

INJURY PREVENTION

Physical therapists can identify poor body mechanics, muscle imbalances, balance deficits, and risk factors that may predispose a person to injury or inhibit their physical and athletic performance.

PREPARE INDIVIDUALS FOR SURGERY

This is also referred to as pre-rehabilitation, or “prehab.” Research has affirmed the positive effects of pre-rehabilitation in patients undergoing anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repair, rotator cuff repair, and hip and knee replacements. Studies show that patients who participate in a supervised exercise program that addresses strength, motor control, mobility, range of motion, flexibility, endurance, and balance prior to surgery are less likely to require inpatient rehabilitation and often recover at a faster rate. In addition to improving surgical outcomes, prehab is an opportunity to build a relationship with your physical therapist, allowing patients the opportunity to ask questions regarding post-operative management.

PROMOTE HEALTH, FITNESS and WELLNESS

Our therapist will develop a customized program focused on optimizing strength, mobility/flexibility, balance and endurance. Our therapist utilizes a whole-body approach to address each patient’s unique orthopedic or neuromuscular dysfunctions and improve their tolerance for daily tasks, work and fitness/athletic activities. Our therapist has advanced her education and skill set, obtaining her board-certification in orthopedics (OCS), certification in strength and agility (CSAC), certifications in blood flow restriction (BFR) training, and has obtained several other advanced certifications including advanced dry needling and concussion training.

IMPROVED ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE

Specially trained physical therapists are experts in sports performance improvement.  Dedication to a sport-specific training program for athletes can be extremely beneficial in preventing injuries and improving performance.  Our athletic performance programs incorporate warm-up exercises, address proper mechanics with sports specific movements, improve speed and agility, and increase endurance.

FALL REDUCTION

Physical therapists work with individuals who have a history of falls or balance deficits. Working on specific balance activities and improving core strength will help to reduce the risk of falls, improve safety, and facilitate independence.

POSTURE and ERGONOMIC ASSESSMENT

Many of us are frequently using computers, phones and tablets and are unaware of our posture while engaging in electronics. Physical therapists can teach you what correct posture actually means and how to implement it into your daily activities.

Our physical therapist can help keep you moving well, allowing you to continue doing the things you love to do!
